Targeted surface and heat treatment for a quality product

Surface and heat treatment

The right surface and heat treatment is an essential processing step for a quality spring, because it is what gives the spring or component its final mechanical properties, flexibility and durability.

In mechanical production processes such as coiling, winding and bending, stresses arise in the material. In the spring, these represent potential weak points at which it could break, distort or be permanently deformed unintentionally. Heat treatments reduce these internal stresses and thus improve the mechanical properties by improving the elastic limit and yield strength.

For heat treatment we use various processes, selected individually depending on application, material and usage scenario:

  • Soft annealing corrects excessive strength after cold forming
  • Hardening increases the strength of materials
  • Stress-relief annealing (tempering) to improve the mechanical properties and reduce stresses in the component
  • Precipitation hardening

Targeted surface treatment

Once the necessary internal properties of a component have been achieved, its mechanical properties or its resistance to external influences can be improved even further by individual surface treatments.

In addition to barrel finishing, vibratory finishing, burnishing, electropolishing, pickling, phosphating, passivating, chrome plating, nickel plating, galvanising, bright galvanising and shot peening, Federtechnik Kaltbrunn AG also offers a wide range of special surface treatments to increase the durability, reliability and quality of our products.

Special processes also used at Federtechnik Kaltbrunn include thick-layer passivation, powder coating, zinc flake coating (including Delta®-Tone and Delta®-Seal corrosion protection systems), glass bead blasting, PTFE Teflon coatings, gold plating, copper plating and the chromating of galvanised steel springs.
